A signal is a series of ons and offs in a electrical currant.  The most common way to send a signal in electronics is with electricity over a metal conductor you can also use optic fibers.  Opticel fiber has pros normal copper wire does not have such as being immune to electromagnetic interference, and opticle fibers can handle much higher frequency over longer distances.
