Piezoelectricity is the charge that accumulates in certain solid materials in response to applied mechanical stress. Some of those materials are crystals, certain ceramics, and biological matter such as bone, DNA and various proteins.
Piezos are used in a lot of every day things such as, button lighters, piezoelectric discs which turn sound into signals, and accelerometers.
